USC is the key to the PAC12.
-They are kinda like the Notre Dame of the West except that they've been in a conference forever. USC has enough cache (like ND) to call its own shots. If I was a low end Pac12 school (Oregon State and Wazzu for example), I'd be very nervous. And the weaker the Pac12 becomes, the more likely USC explores options. I even think they could go independent like Notre Dame.
-Not sure how a P4 that you mentioned would happen or work. I have a feeling that some schools that think they would have a home, won't. There will be a lot of angst.
-I always thought a BigXII-Pac12 merger made sense to become the first "superconference". Maybe buyout West Virginia/pay the ACC to take them. Maybe add BYU. and there would be many possibilities for exposure.
-I, for one, am surprised by the Pac12's struggles. From top to bottom it is probably my favorite conference in terms of continuity. I always stay up late on Saturdays in the fall to watch #Pac12AfterDark. Every school has a rival that isn't contrived (with the exception of the newbees, Colorado and Utah). I used to love the Pac10 when they had round robin play.
